India has surpassed Thailand to become the biggest rice exporter to Singapore, shipping nearly 93,000 tonnes of the grain to the Southeast Asian country.

The Times of India newspaper, in its October 12 edition, quoted a spokesperson of the Singaporean Ministry of Industry and Trade as saying the country’s importers are taking advantage of the prices offered by Indian exporters which are lower than those by Thai rivals to increase imports.

Besides, the change in the tastes is also a factor. While Singaporean people are consuming less rice, the influx of foreigners to this country has caused a skyrocketing demand for the grain which is not necessarily from Thailand.-VNA
