Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia has set a target of raking in 6.05 billion USD from exports of seafood in 2021, more than 1 billion USD higher than previous year, according to Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Artati Widiarti.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic poses challenges, it also presents Indonesia with opportunities amid growing demand for seafood products in the global market.

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Indonesia, the country’s total export value of marine and fishery commodities hit 1.75 billion USD in the first quarter of 2021, up 4.15 percent over the same period last year.

The trade balance surplus during this period had reached 1.59 billion USD, up 3.26 percent, from the figure in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The increase in export value and trade balance surplus in the marine and fishery sector became the momentum to achieve the export target of marine and fishery products of 6.05 billion USD in 2021, Widiarti noted.

Indonesia is the world's largest exporter of seafood products, with a total export turnover of 5.2 billion USD in 2020, of which 4.84 billion USD came from fish consumption.

It boasts a strong seafood industry, with about 2,191 fish processing units for export across the country. It exports seafood products to 157 countries worldwide./.
