Jakarta (VNA) – The COVID-19 emergency status will remain in place in Indonesia until May before the World Health Organisation (WHO) issue new instructions, according to Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy.

Addressing a conference on public health emergency status on April 3, Effendy said there are two diseases that have been accorded an emergency status, namely COVID-19 and Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

Participants agreed that the COVID-19 emergency status will continue in the country, he said, adding that the government will monitor the pandemic’s development and wait for instructions from the WHO.

In May, the government will make a decision on whether the pandemic status will continue or be changed to endemic, he said.

At the “Ministerial-Level Meeting on COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Status and FMD Emergency Status”, participants agreed that a joint task force will be formed in the future to handle both COVID-19 and FMD, Effendy said.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo said the FMD is likely to be controlled soon, the emergency status can be ended and changed to “certain condition” or “special condition".

This is important to sort out the implemented legal umbrella and regulations, especially those related to the appointment from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, he noted./.
