Four Turkish individuals have been arrested by the Indonesian anti-terrorism police for their suspected links to international and regional terrorist organisations, a spokeman said on September 14.
The Indonesian squad stopped the Turkish nationals, along with three Indonesians, en route to the central Sulawesi district of Poso, where an Islamic State jihadist group is based, allegedly Al-Qaeda’s South-East Asian branch.
Poso district witnessed numerous violent clashes between Muslims and Christians, with more than 1,000 deaths and 25,000 evacuees between 1998 and 2001.
The Government of Jakarta estimates that dozens of citizens have left the country to fight in Syria and Iraq. Consequently, the government is concerned about the spread of extremist ideology throughout Indonesia upon their return.-VNA
