Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia evacuated more than 1,000 domestic and foreign tourists on September 28 after a volcano eruption of Mount Barujari in the central province of West Nusa Tenggara.

Local police and authorities are also searching for hundreds of other tourists, according to the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB).

The agency said 333 foreign tourists and 56 domestic ones were visiting the volcano when it erupted on September 27 with the ash column rising up to 2 km in the sky.

Authorities have announced dangerous areas within a 3km radius from the volcano and prepared 300,000 masks for people.

Indonesia is home to over 17,500 islands and around 130 active volcanoes, including Barujari. Volcano eruption occurs regularly in the country which lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire.-VNA
