Indonesia ’s Foreign Ministry highly values Vietnam ’s role as Chair of ASEAN 2010 and its contributions to bringing the ASEAN Charter into life, stepping up cooperation within the bloc and improving the group’s position internationally.
In an interview granted to the Jakarta-based Vietnam News Agency (VNA) correspondent, the ministry stated the greatest achievement Vietnam made is to successfully reinforce the bloc’s commitment in realising the ASEAN Charter and lay a foundation for building the ASEAN Community by 2015.
The ministry affirmed that ASEAN has consistently followed the path to forming its own community through 2010, when Vietnam holds the bloc’s chairmanship.
Another extremely outstanding result is the mapping out of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity, which is expected to facilitate people-to-people exchanges and the flows of goods and information amongst the member nations, and create a new momentum for the regional economy, according to the ministry.
Indonesia also applauded Vietnam ’s efforts in pointing out pending and emerging issues in ASEAN, including terrorist activities, piracy, and security on maritime transport routes and fishing operations.
Regarding bilateral relations, the ministry said both Indonesia and Vietnam are now emerging economies, adding that the two nations can further boost cooperation for mutual benefit and make significant contributions to the global economy.
Rapid growth of the two countries is contributing to the region’s development. As a result, the region recorded an annual average growth rate of 4 percent even when it was facing adverse impacts of the global economic and financial crisis.
Economically, Indonesia and Vietnam hold a lot of opportunities and potential to support each other, especially in infrastructure development, fishing, food security and agriculture.
The two nations can set up linkages between Indonesia ’s apparel textile and rubber industries with the silk production and plastic sectors of Vietnam , respectively.
On political relations, Indonesia and Vietnam need to boost cooperation in maritime security and safety, and most importantly ensure regional peace within the framework of ASEAN and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
Bilateral cooperation in these fields has contributed to peace and stability in the region and the world at large, helping to build a better world, said the ministry./.
