Indonesia speeds up construction of temporary houses for tsunami victims
The Indonesian Government is speeding up construction on temporary houses for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Palu, Central Sulawesi, Vice President Jusuf Kalla has stated.

Kalla, who is also the Palu disaster mitigation team commander, said that more than 30 percent of the planned 12,000 temporary victim houses have been finalised and handed over to beneficiaries.
The Government will build a new city to replace Palu as it was entirely destroyed after the earthquake, and subsequent tsunami and soil liquefaction. Victims will be resettled when the building of the new city is completed.
The construction is expected to begin within this year. The necessary cost has yet to be announced, but the Ministry of Public Works and Housing estimates the cost will reach 4 trillion IDR (nearly 283.9 million USD).
Sulawesi was ravaged by two quakes measuring 6.1 and 7.5 on the Richter scale on September 28. A 6m tsunami hit the shores after the second quake struck the area in the afternoon of the same day.
The disasters killed more than 2,200 people, left 1,000 missing, nearly 11,000 injured, and 83,000 others forced to evacuate. Economic loss was 1.22 billion USD. The Indonesian Government estimated that it would need at least 657 million USD for reconstruction and resettlement works, alongside support from many countries and international organisations. –VNA
