Jakarta (VNA) – As many as 1,091 hikers have been evacuated from Mt. Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara of Indonesia after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake triggered landslides on the mountain on July 29 morning. 

Of the total, 723 are foreigners and 368 are Indonesians, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

The evacuation campaign was participated by almost 250 military soldiers and policemen, as well as personnel of the National Search and Rescue Agency and volunteers.

Rescuers found six local residents in Susu cave and provided them with preliminary aid. More than 10,000 people have evacuated to safe places.

The earthquake on Lombok island, some 100km from the resort island of Bali to the East, killed at least 17 people and injured 401 others.

The incident also damaged 5,448 houses, 15 schools, five health establishments, 55 churches, 37 kiosks and one bridge.

Two other earthquakes, with magnitudes of 3 and 3.3 Richter, occurred on July 31 and August 1 in the region. No fatalities were reported in the two quakes, but local residents did not dare to come back home.-VNA
