Jakarta (VNA) – The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency of Indonesia on September 22 raised alert status of Agung volcano in Bali resort island to Level 4, the highest level.

Local authorities said the alert was based on recent activities of the volcano. With the new alert, evacuation zone was extended to 12km from the crater for areas in the north, northeast, southeast, south and southwest.

All residents in those areas have to evacuate since morning of September 23 and all travel and public activities are canceled.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, Head of Data, Information and Public Relation of Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management, said that a national steering centre will be established to manage all activities coping with risks of the volcanic eruption. Equipment will be promptly transferred to evacuation centres and relevant agencies will apply appropriate measures. 

Local authorities also called on people to stay calm and follow guidance of relevant agencies to avoid damage caused by the volcano.

Nearly 10,000 villagers have escaped the no-go zone in 50 locations of three districts as volcanic and tectonic tremors became more intensified in the past few days.-VNA
