Indonesia plans to introduce a 15 percent anti-dumping duty on steel products in an effort to prevent mass steel imports from China and increase the competitive capacity of the domestic steel industry, according to the Antara News Agency.

Antara quoted Indonesian Minister of Industry Saleh Husin as saying on February 26 that of the 170 tariffs imposed on construction steel, 130 will be levied at 15 percent while the remaining 40 are under discussion to determine individually applicable rates.

He added that the country’s 2014 exports experienced an annual increase of 17 percent to reach 2.23 billion USD, while steel imports witnessed only a 0.2 percent decrease to stand at 12.6 million USD.

Indonesia ’s demand for steel rose significantly to 12.7 million tonnes in 2014 from 7.4 million tonnes in 2009, and it is expected to continue growing to match national economic development.

In a bid to meet domestic demand and avoid dependence on imported products, the ministry is continuing its efforts to improve the quality and production capacity of manufacturers.

The country’s demand for steel is forecast to reach 17.5 million tonnes by 2019.-VNA
