Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia has set up special anti-terrorism mechanisms, including a task force to ensure security for the upcoming 18th Asian Games hosted by Indonesia’s Jakarta and Palembang cities in August.

Chairman of Indonesia Asian Games Organising Committee Erick Thohir made the statement on May 13, following the bombings in three Surabaya churches the same day, which claimed at least 11 lives and left 41 others injured.

Indonesia has plans to mobilise police and military to ensure safety for the sport event, he said, adding that the physical mechanism would be coupled with cyber protection mechanism to counter terror risk from cyber world.

VIP guests, athletes and officials would be guarded by security apparatus as part of the procedures to minimise terror risk in the Asian Games, he noted. Meanwhile, the venues to host the match and spectators will get security accreditation as well.

Ticket buyers must provide their detailed information like address and phone numbers, he said.

An estimated 270,000 people, including supporters, athletes and officials, will get involved in the second continental sport event hosted by the Southeast Asian country from August 18 to September 2.
