Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia has over 80,000 villages nationwide, and the capitalisation of their tourism potential is expected to vastly improve the quality of life for local residents.

The country’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy said the Government considers tourism villages a leading priority in tourism recovery efforts in the post-pandemic period.

Addressing the recent ASEAN Tourism Forum 2023 in Indonesia’s Yogyakarta city, Raden Wisnu Sindhutrisno, Marketing Director of tourism marketing Asia-Pacific at the ministry, said the development of tourism villages is one of the top tourism recovery strategies because it has a direct impact on the local community.

Many villages possess unique features in terms of natural landscapes and culture, so they will be magnets for visitors and tourism dollars, he noted.

The ministry will coordinate with other ministries and sectors to provide capacity building training for managers of tourism villages, and increase infrastructure investment to facilitate tourist access to these villages, Wisnu added.

On January 30, the Indonesian ministry launched the Indonesian Tourism Village Awards 2023. It aims to raise the number of tourism villages to 4,000 this year, from 3,419 in 2022./.
