Jakarta (VNA) – The Maritime Festival of Riau Islands opened on October 29 Tanjung Pinang city of Indonesia’s Riau Islands province to promote images of its destinations and attract investment. 

Speaking at the event, Indonesian Tourism Minister Arif Yahya affirmed the great tourism potential of the province, adding it is the third biggest tourism hub in the Southeast Asian country after Bali and Indonesia. 

He also said Indonesian government will call on foreign investors to construct a seaport on the islands, helping Riau become a national maritime gateway. 

The Indonesian government has pursued and fostered maritime economic development, Deputy Maritime Minister Safro Burhanuddin told Vietnam News Agency, adding the event is part of government and local authorities’ efforts to promote economic activities, especially maritime tourism.

The festival’s activities, including boat race, photo exhibitions, sea carnavals and seminars on traditional cultures, take place from October 20-31.-VNA
