Indonesia pushes for implementation of Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar
Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi
said on April 5 that over the past three months, as ASEAN 2023 Chair, Indonesia
has been pushing for the implementation of the ASEAN Leaders' Five-Point
Consensus (5PC) on Myanmar.
Speaking at a press
conference, Marsudi said Indonesia had the first meetings with special envoys of
the United Nations Secretary-General, neighboring country Myanmar and other
nations, with the main purpose of promoting coordination and collective
strength while continuing to reinforce ASEAN's central role.
Indonesia also reported
developments related to Myanmar, especially the implementation of the 5PC to
the UN Security Council in a closed meeting on March 13, during which member
states expressed their strong support for Indonesia's role as ASEAN Chair, ASEAN's
central role, and the 5PC, she said.
According to her, Indonesia
also facilitated the resumption of communication and consultation with relevant
parties so that the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on
Disaster Management (AHA) could distribute humanitarian aid to the people of
Myanmar, regardless of ethnicity, religion, and political orientation.
Marsudi promised that Indonesia will continue with efforts to facilitate inclusive
dialogue and put an end to the use of violence, as well as allow immediate
humanitarian assistance. Indonesia will also maintain efforts to build trust
and act as a "bridge" to eliminate differences between all parties involved.
The 5-Point Consensus, adopted by ASEAN leaders in April 2021 to
support stability in Myanmar and its effective engagement in ASEAN cooperation and community building, includes agreed-upon points such as ending violence, holding constructive
dialogue among all parties involved, providing humanitarian assistance for
Myanmar, appointing an ASEAN Special Envoy to facilitate talks, and allowing
ASEAN Special Envoy to visit Myanmar./.
