Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ratified an ASEAN agreement to assist member states that experience emergency energy shortages.
The ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement was adopted by member states in Thailand in 2009.
The agreement stipulates the establishment of Coordinated Emergency Response Measures (CERM) to help ASEAN member countries deal with energy crises.
An Indonesian Government spokesperson said that President Yudhoyono’s decision is based on the Constitution, existing oil and energy laws, international cooperation, and ASEAN’s energy cooperation pact, which Indonesia ratified in 1995.
The emergency measures will be set in motion when a member country experiences energy shortages of 10 percent of its normal domestic consumption for at least 30 consecutive days.
Under the mechanism, the country will be required to report to the Secretariat of the ASEAN Council on Petroleum (ASCOPE)./. VNA
