Indonesian migrant workers sent 7.4 billion USD back to Indonesia in 2013, according to the National Agency for Placement and Protection of Indonesian Workers Abroad (BNP2TKI).

BNP 2TKI Head Moh Jumhur Hidayat said the remittances excluded the money carried in the form of cash by the workers when they returned home or sent through services other than banks, such as postal transfer and Western Union.

He estimated the 2013 remittances from six million Indonesian workers in 160 countries could possibly have reached 12 billion USD.

The remittance has helped the government to reduce its unemployment rate at home and the six million workers aboard have financially supported an estimated 30 million people back at home, Jumhur claimed.-VNA
