The fatalities from traffic accidents during the celebration of the holy month of Ramadan and Homecoming festival Idul Fitri which fell from July 10-22 this year totalled 529, a year on year reduction of 17 percent, according to the Indonesian police.

There were 2,545 road accidents during the 12-day holiday, an annual drop of 1 percent and 17 percent.

As many Indonesians flooded out of cities and headed to their hometowns and villages to spend Idul Fitri with their families, the local police deployed 82,500 personnel to work continuously to ensure a steady traffic flow from July 10 to July 27.

According to National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti, almost 145,700 personnel were on duty during the festival nationwide, including 12,700 from military forces.

The end of this week will mark a massive return to the cities.-VNA
