Indonesia to become self-sufficient in salt in 2017

achieve self-sufficiency by 2017.

Accordingly, the government will enact measures to support local salt farmers and tighten controls over salt imports.
Salt importers in the country have been encouraged to buy and distribute salt produced by local producers.
This year, Indonesia is expected to produce 4 million tonnes of salt, 1.5 million for industry use and 2.5 million for the consumer market.
Indonesia boasts the year-round sunshine and second longest coastline after Canada, ideal conditions for salt production.
However, the country currently depends on imports for high-quality salt for industrial purposes.-VNA
