Indonesia to close border with PNG for election security

border with neighbouring Papua New Guinea (PNG) to ensure security for
the upcoming legislative election which will be held on April 9.

The border will be closed until April 12, head of the Indonesia-PNG border office Susanna Wanggai said, adding that Indonesia had informed the PNG Government of its decision.
She noted that from100 to 300 PNG citizens enter Indonesia on a daily basis, which can increase to over 1,000 during festive seasons or goods promotion occasions.
The move aims to prevent any incidents relating to Indonesian separatists, she added.
The Indonesian Police (POLRI) has deployed 253,035 officers to secure the general election. At the same time, special mobile taskforces have been set up to maintain security in areas with high risks of instability such as Aceh, Maluku, Papua and Poso.
According to Indonesia’s General Election Commission, more than 186 million eligible voters are expected to cast their votes at 545,778 stations nationwide.-VNA
