Hanoi (VNA) – Indonesia is set to implement a plan to destroy millions of eggs in a bid to prop up slumping chicken prices, calling on poultry breeders to cut supply by either destroying eggs or giving them away.
The French news agency AFP quoted I Ketut Diarmita, director general of Livestock and Animal Health Services of Indonesia as saying that the only way to bolster chicken prices is to discard 10 million eggs.
Dozens of firms are expected to take part in destroying the eggs, according to the country’s Poultry Breeding Association.
Indonesian officials hope reducing the number of eggs will cut chicken supplies and boost market prices.
Cheap chicken may be good for consumers, but it has caused damage to the poultry industry. According to official figures, chicken prices in Indonesia have dropped by 25 percent this year to a three-year low.-VNA
