Indonesia to export rice to Malaysia
Indonesia will export between 15,000 and 50,000 tonnes of rice to Malaysia as part of efforts to meet the rice demand of the neighbouring country and show the growth of its agricultural sector.
Illustrative image (Source: AFP/VNA) According to Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman, Malaysian Agriculture Minister expressed interest in importing Indonesian rice at a recent meeting.
Sulaiman underscored that Indonesia has succeeded in meeting domestic food demand, especially after the rice-farming programmes in border areas was implemented effectively.
Since 2016, Indonesia has ended rice import.
The minister added that Indonesia will ship to Malaysia its Raja Unca rice originated from Pontianak island in Western Kalimantan.
The Indonesian Government has also planned to continue its efforts to promote agricultural production, in order to maintain food self-sufficiency while striving to become a food bowl of the world in 2045.
Indonesia’s current rice reserve has reached 1.9 million tonnes, which is sufficient to meet locals’ demand in the upcoming Ramadan festival. The country will also continue maintaining the stability of rice price and the stocks of rice as well as of other goods, the official added.-VNA
