Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa has spoken highly of Vietnam ’s role as ASEAN Chair and said that Indonesia should learn from its chairmanship experience.

The FM said on the sidelines of ASEAN meetings in Hanoi that Indonesia will take over ASEAN Chairmanship from Vietnam next year and therefore, he had a conservation with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem to share this experience.

He also emphasised Vietnam ’s positive contribution to ASEAN over the last 15 years since the country officially became the group’s member on July 28, 1995.

“Vietnam should be very proud that within its 15-year membership of ASEAN, it not only becomes an active participant in the group but exactly becomes a key leader at ASEAN’s events and role,” he said

The 43rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM-43) and related meetings in Hanoi have re-enforced Vietnam’s key role in ASEAN, he added.

The Indonesian FM also highly valued Vietnam’s initiatives at the meetings, including the country’s proposal to introduce an ASEAN policy on assisting people in accident at sea.

This helps bring benefit for the ASEAN community, he said./.
