Indonesia pledged to do its utmost in building the ASEAN Community by 2015 and urged ASEAN member nations to take concrete steps toward the goal.

At his initial press conference of the year, Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa stressed that the planned ASEAN Community would ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the representing countries.

A successful community by 2015 would also open up an opportunity establishing an East Asian Community as discussed last year, he added.

Natalegawa highlighted Indonesia’s foreign policy in 2010 in the aspects of politics, economy, security and relations with partners.

Indonesia will continue pursuing a foreign policy of expanding multilateral relations and exhibiting independence and activeness in addressing global challenges and crises, he said.

The minister also emphasised the need to reform the United Nations, especially in the expansion of the UN Security Council, to improve the efficiency of the world’s largest governing body./.
