Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian Government has called on local fishermen to stay away from waters off the state of Sabah near the border with the Philippines until security in the region is stable.

The waters between Malaysia and the Philippines saw several robberies and kidnappings allegedly committed by the Philippine Abu Sayyaf militant group in the past three weeks.

The Indonesian Consulate General in Malaysia recommended fishermen not operate in the area until the Malaysian Government could ensure their safety.

On November 5, gunmen abducted two Indonesian fishermen off eastern Sabah.

Earlier in October, an Indonesian fishermen was wounded by gunfire near the waters.-VNA
