Indonesia ’s Prime Minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has described the bombs that ripped through two luxury hotels in Jakarta on July 17, killing at least nine people and injuring 50, as an act of terrorism.

The blasts happened simultaneously at the J.W Marriot and Ritz-Carlton hotels, located side-by-side in an upmarket area of the capital, at 7.50 and 7.55 in the morning.

According to Security Minister Widodo Adi Sucipto, the initial investigation by the anti-terror force reported that bombs had been placed in the Air Langga restaurant in the Ritz-Carlton hotel and in JW Marriot’s basement.

An unexploded bomb and explosive materials were also discovered in a room in the JW Marriot hotel, which they believe was the “control centre” for the bomb attacks.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks. However Indonesia has experienced a number of recent deadly bomb attacks, including the one in Bali in 2002 that claimed 200 lives and another in the JW Marriott hotel in 2003, which killed 12 people. All have been linked to the al-Qaida affiliates Jemaah Islamiyah./.
