The death toll in the 7.3 magnitude earthquake in West Java, Indonesia, has risen to 46, while more than 300 others have been injured or are still missing.

The number of people killed in the September 2 catastrophe could also increase as dozens of people are still trapped in the ruins.

According to the initial statistics, over 1,300 houses were destroyed, leaving thousands of people homeless.

Officials say that the worst damage caused by the earthquake, which occurred off the south coast of Java at around 3:00 pm (0800 GMT) on September 2, was in the districts of Cianjur, Garut and Tasikmalaya in West Java province.

The quake was also felt in Jakarta, 200 kilometres (123 miles) away from the epicentre, where terrified residents poured out of swaying office blocks, shopping malls and their homes as the tremors struck, killing at least one person.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said his country has offered to assist neighbouring Indonesia to deal with the consequences of the disaster./.
