The National Assembly’s Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong has confirmed the necessity for industrialisation and modernisation in the central province of Quang Tri, especially in agriculture and rural areas.

Chairman Trong stated this while meeting with Quang Tri’s provincial leaders on January 14 during his two-day tour of the province.

The province should mobilise all its resources to ensure strong and sustainable development while closing the gap between rich and poor areas and promoting social progress, he added.

The provincial authorities reported that Quang Tri has more than quadrupled its economy and the average annual income per-capita is 20 times more than during the 1991-2000 period.

Its number of poor households has fallen from 24.4 percent in 2000 to 14.9 percent at present and the proportion of agriculture in the local economy has decreased from 64 percent to 30 percent while the construction industry accounted for almost 35 percent and services made up just over 35 percent.

While affirming that Quang Tri province always pays attention to developing its agricultural sector and upgrading rural areas, local authorities said they will continue to speed up industrialisation and modernisation, particularly in agriculture and rural areas./.
