Men play an essential role in ending domestic violence and protecting the rights of women and girls, Mandeep K. O’Brien, Acting Chief Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Vietnam, has said.

O’Brien made the statement at a seminar to promote the active participation of men and boys in preventing violence.

She stressed that the discrimination and violation of women and girls in every corner of the world is a social evil, contravening human rights.

According to O’Brien, Vietnam has rolled out many programmes and initiatives to encourage males to participate in the battle against domestic violence. However, these programmes need to be on a much larger scale to make long-term changes, she suggested.

On the occasion, the UN in Vietnam announced research studies to look at the underlying reasons of gender discrimination, and measures to reduce domestic violence.-VNA
