The fourth Jakarta International Defence Dialogue opened in the Indonesian capital on March 19 under the chair of the host country’s Vice President Boediono, aiming to strengthen cooperation in maritime security and stability.

The two-day event is being attended by delegates from 46 countries, including those from ASEAN member countries, China, Australia, the United States and several nations from Europe and Africa.

Indonesian Defence Minister Purnomo Yusgoantoro said the forum would be the best place to share the challenges faced by many countries in improving their maritime security, tackling trans-boundary crime, and encouraging the establishment of bilateral and multilateral cooperation to settle maritime conflicts.

In addition to defence ministers, the annual event is also attended by scholars and observers from the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).-VNA
