The 40th Worldskills International Competition kicked off on September 1 in the Canadian city of Calgary.

The competition, the largest of its kind so far, drew the participation of more than 900 contestants from 51 countries and territories around the world to compete in 45 categories.

For this year’s event, Vietnam sent ten contestants to participate in nine categories including information technology, web design, restaurant services, cooking, mechanical electronics, civil woodwork, industrial electronics, civil electricity and refrigeration.

Chairman of the competition Richard Walker said he hopes that the competition will not only contribute to raising young people’s awareness of job opportunities but also help them set themselves up in business.

The event which will last until September 8 is expected to attract hundred of thousands of visitors.

This is the second time Vietnam has participated in a worldskills competition. It won only one certificate for excellence at the previous contest in Japan in 2007./.
