The Principal Donors Group (PDG) for the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has pledged to continue financial support for the court in the pursuit of justice for victims of atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime.

The PDG made the commitment during their working visit to Cambodia from June 25-27, reported local media on June 29.

During their stay, representatives of the PDG, including Japan, Australia, the US, France and Germany, studied files and documents on the ECCC’s investigation and judging.

They left Cambodia with a clear sense that the ECCC has made significant progress in holding to account those most responsible for atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge and the PDG will continue to support this essential mandate.

The PDG also highly valued the Cambodian Government’s cooperation in the job.

The budget for the ECCC in the 2014-2015 is estimated at 60.5 million USD, of which 12.4 million USD will come from the Cambodian Government and the remaining from the PDG.

Between 2006 and 2013, the ECCC spent 204.6 million USD on the Khmer Rouge trials.

At present, the court is handling Case 002 against two senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge, namely Nuon Chea and Khieu Somphon. The trial verdict is expected to be delivered on August 7.-VNA
