Vietnamese International Grandmaster Le Quang Liem had his first draw in the opening match of the World Chess Blitz and Rapid Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, on June 6.

Liem tied with Mohammed Al-Sayed of Qatar after 47 moves. However, he beat Rakhim Pasiev in the second match.

Meanwhile, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son drew with Russlan Ponomariov of Ukraine in the 43rd move of the first match but was beaten by Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan after 34 moves in the second.

In the third match, Liem drew with Ponomariov after 77 moves, while Son was defeated by Vladislav Artemiev of Russia after 66 moves.

Currently Vietnam’s top chess player, Liem has dropped one place to 30th position in the latest ranking by the International Chess Federation's compared to early May, after he went down in the recent Asian Chess Championships.-VNA
