– The 74th General Assembly and Congress of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) wrapped up in Ho Chi Minh City on April 28.

The event helped strengthen the solidarity, friendship and cooperation in the field of sports between Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defense and international counterparts.

Major General Vu Van Sy, director of the military training bureau from the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, said the function reviewed the CISM’s performance in 2018 and mapped out operational programmes for 2019 and the following years.

Implementing the Party and State’s foreign policies of expansion, multilateralisation and diversification of external relations, the defence ministry will continue promoting multinational cooperation, focusing on sports activities for peace, cooperation, friendship and common development with peoples and armies from other countries worldwide.

According to CISM President, Colonel Herve Piccirillo, participants agreed to expand relations and increase connectivity between the CISM with world sports federations and national ones, aiming at the general sports movement around the globe.

The CISM also set the target of promoting sports activities for disabled soldiers and considers this an important task in helping them recover their physical and mental health and supporting them to integrate into society.

Member countries adopted the organisation’s strategic document outlining special plans and roadmaps for the CISM’s development in the next five years.

Colonel Herve Piccirillo said the success of this year’s event was evidenced by the participation of more than 90 countries, and particularly the admission of two new members: Ghana and Mozambique.

The CISM was founded in 1948 and currently has 138 member countries. Each year, it organises more than 100 sporting tournaments hosted by its members.

The council aims to promote sporting activities and physical education in armed forces, while fostering friendship and solidarity through providing technical assistance for its members.-VNA
