Cambodia 's UN-backed genocide court on Jan. 14 announced that it had completed the investigations against former Khmer Rouge top leaders and is preparing for the second trial.

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) charged five ex-Khmer Rouge leaders with genocide and other crimes. They were Kang Guek Eav, also known as Duch, Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan and Ieng Sary and his wife Ieng Thirith.

Duch, chief of the Tuols’ leng-S21 prison, is the first prominent Khmer Rouge leader to go on trial at the court.

The ECCC spokesman Lars Olsen described the conclusion of the investigation into their cases “a milestone” in the judicial process.

Judges will have 30 days to conduct more investigations to issue their formal indictments by September, Olsen said, adding that the second trial is expected to open by the end of the year./.
