Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai on October 16 presented the State President’s Friendship Medal to John S. Gunning, an energy expert from Ireland, for his contributions to Vietnam’s energy sector, especially in the 1980-1990 period.

Speaking at the granting ceremony, Deputy PM Hai said that what Gunning had done helped improve existing power plants and build new ones in Vietnam, thus fostering relations between the two countries in general and their energy sectors in particular.

Gunning, managing director at Terotech International and director of Lumcloon Energy Company, has worked in Vietnam for more than 20 years and served as a bridge for Ireland’s EBS International to support power projects in Vietnam.

He has sought support programmes and projects from the Government of Ireland for Vietnam, as well as scholarships and training courses for Vietnamese technicians.

He has also consulted for many major projects in Vietnam, such as Phu My 2.1, Ba Ria, Phu My 4, NhonTrach, Pha Lai II and Hai Phong.

With these contributions, Gunning has been earlier awarded medals by the Ministry of Industry and Electricity of Vietnam (EVN).-VNA
