Jakarta to offer free public transportation to 15 groups

Jakarta will provide free public transportation for 15 groups of residents as part of the 100-day programme led by its Governor Pramono Anung and Deputy Governor Rano Karno.

Jakarta (VNA) – Jakarta's Provincial Government is currently preparing a policy for free public transportation for 15 groups of residents in the city as part of the 100-day programme led by its Governor Pramono Anung and Deputy Governor Rano Karno.

The entitled groups include Jakarta Provincial Government civil servants and retirees, contract workers employed by the provincial government, KJP student recipients, certain private sector employees or workers earning at least the provincial minimum wage (UMP); residents holding ID cards from the Seribu Islands; rice aid recipients living in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek); as well as members of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police (Polri).

The residents will be eligible to use public transportation for free in Jakarta, such as Transjakarta, the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), the Light Rail Transit (LRT), and JakLingko.

Earlier, Pramono and Rano highlighted this initiative of free public transport during their campaign in November 2024 to improve access to public transportation for specific groups.

The initiative is expected to help decrease both traffic congestion in Jakarta and the cost of living.

In addition, Jakarta also planned to expand the public transportation network to surrounding areas. It will adjust the routes so that residents in surrounding urban areas can travel to and from Jakarta with public transportation./.
