On April 8, the Japanese government appointed Takio Yamada, a senior envoy from the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia, as ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Mr Yamada, 50, will hold frequent talks with senior ASEAN officials and representatives of the ASEAN countries in Indonesia.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said in a press release that by having an ambassador in Jakarta, Japan will be able to respond more quickly on ASEAN-related issues. Before, the former Japanese Ambassador for ASEAN affairs Yoshinori Katori was based in Tokyo.

ASEAN’s dialogue partners are also expected to nominate ambassadors in Indonesia, where the ASEAN Secretariat is based./.
