The Japanese Embassy in Vietnam has agreed to provide 1.5 million USD in financial aid to a mine clearance project in the central province of Quang Tri.
According to Hoang Nam , Deputy Director of the province’s Department of Foreign Affairs, the project, which started on March 17 and will run until May 17 2011, is being carried out in nine coastal communes and towns in Vinh Linh, Gio Linh, Trieu Phong and Hai Lang districts.
The province’s Department of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs had previously reported that since 1975, 2,600 people in the province have died from bomb and mine explosions, while many hundreds of others have been seriously injured.
The province has also received support from other international organisations, including MAG from the UK , RNEW from Norway and the US and SODI from Germany , to carry out mine clearance, improve the environment and develop local infrastructures./.
