The Japanese government has pledged to grant nearly 89,000 USD for the construction of a new school in Tien Thang commune of the northern port city of Hai Phong.

Under a contract signed on July 3, the aid will be used to build a new two- storey building with 8 classrooms to replace the old 40-year old primary school.

The grant is part of the Japanese government’s non-refundable grassroots assistance programme for Vietnam in the 2009 fiscal year, the Japanese Embassy in Vietnam said.

Once finished, the project will enable nearly 550 local children to take up whole day learning in line with government policy.

At the signing ceremony, Japanese Ambassador Mitsuo Sakaba said: “I hope that this project funded by the Government of Japan will improve remarkably primary educational environment of Tien Thang commune. I also hope that through this project, the friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and Viet Nam will be further deepened”./.
