Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s scheduled visit to Vietnam on Oct.31 indicates Japan’s stance of placing emphasis on relations with Vietnam.
Satoru Satou, spokesperson of the Japanese Foreign Ministry said on Oct. 29 in Hanoi that Japan hopes, through the visit, the two sides would engage in the comprehensive promotion of their bilateral strategic partnership.
The Japanese PM is expected to discuss bilateral cooperation with his Vietnamese counterpart, especially on economic issues, infrastructure development and Japanese projects underway in Vietnam as well as the transfer of Japanese technologies and expertise to Vietnam.
Before starting his official visit, PM Kan will attend the 5 th East Asia Summit which Japan considers important for ensuring peace and stability in the region, taking place on the sidelines of the 17 th ASEAN Summit.
Satou also affirmed that Japan supports Vietnam’s initiatives regarding the East Asia Summit and the implementation of the ASEAN connectivity master plan in the fields of infrastructure, institutions and people-to-people contact, which was just adopted at the 17 th ASEAN Summit.
“Japan highly appreciates Vietnam’s leadership in organising the 17 th ASEAN Summit and related Summits and believes it will successfully fulfill the ASEAN chairmanship,” he said./.
