Japanese Emperor Akihito has presented a research paper he wrote on the Vietnamese goby fish to the University of Natural Sciences , part of Hanoi National University.

The Japanese Embassy in Vietnam presented the paper to University officials on March 6.

Emperor Akihito, like his father before him, is a renowned and passionate ichthyologist, or a scientific expert on fish.

In 1976, through the Japanese Emperor’s research into Vietnamese fish (at that time he was the Crown Prince of Japan), a new species of goby was discovered in a branch of Can Tho River. His research paper containing his findings was subsequently published in a major scientific journal.

That same year, a copy of the research paper was given to Hanoi   National University. It is now displayed in the  Animal Museum of the  University of Natural Sciences under Hanoi National University.

The dean of the University of Natural Sciences, Bui Duy Cam, described the presentation as a special gift from the Japanese Emperor to Vietnam in general and to the university in particular.

Japan’s Ambassador to Vietnam, Mitsuo Sabaka, said that this was not only a scientific project, but a symbolic representation of Vietnamese – Japanese friendship./.
