Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso has announced that he will dissolve the lower house on July 21 to pave the way for the general election scheduled for August 30.

PM Aso’s decision came on July 17 just hours after the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)'s leaders rejected a proposal put forth by some LDP members to convene a plenary session in an attempt to force Aso to step down from his post as LDP President and elect a new party president ahead of the house’s election.

The LDP will hold an informal meeting on July 21 morning before the lower house is dissolved, LDP Secretary General Hiroyuki Hosoda told reporters.

The planned meeting will be an opportunity for Aso to review the LDP’s consecutive failures in the recent local elections and unite the party prior to the upcoming general election.

PM Aso also plans to convene a cabinet meeting on the morning of July 21 to approve the dissolution of the lower house./.
