Hanoi (VNA) – Former US Secretary of State John Kerry said he wants to assist Ho Chi Minh City in attracting foreign investment at a meeting with Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan in Hanoi on June 21.

Kerry suggested the city improve transparency of the governance mechanisms to enhance investors’ trust.

He also affirmed his readiness to cooperate with the southern economic hub to build a smart city.

Mentioning the Fulbright Vietnam University, which is located in the Hi-Tech Park of Ho Chi Minh City, Kerry asked Secretary Nhan to support the building of accommodations for students in the Hi-Tech Park.

Nguyen Thien Nhan, who is also a Politburo member and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, expressed his hope that the former Secretary of State, with his experience and prestige, will continue to contribute to the relations between Vietnam and the US.

The Vietnamese Government is focusing on improving investment environment, he said, noting that HCM City plans to soon finalise a plan on one-stop mechanism better serve investors.

The city also aims to become a financial centre and wants the US to provide more assistance in this field, he said.

Nhan appreciated the work of Kerry over the past 10 years for the Fulbright University Vietnam (FUV), and promised to study the school’s location at the Saigon Hi-tech Park before giving an official reply on his proposal on the university’s dormitory.-VNA
