The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has so far mobilised over 3 trillion VND (140 million USD) to develop the movement of new-style area building.
Thanks to the funding, the province has built infrastructure facilities in the health care, education areas in 35 communes where the pilot new-style area building movement are being carried out.
Kien Giang has also implemented rural transport projects, resulting in 96 out of 103 communes having roads. All communes are connected to the national grid and have medical stations.
Across the province, there are now two communes meeting all 19 criteria of building new-style rural areas, six others satisfying 15-18 criteria, and 33 communes reaching 10-14 criteria.
However, the province has faced difficulties in implement the programme as the system of rural roads, healthcare infrastructure, cultural facilities and electricity network have not been developed synchronously.
Building infrastructure, improving production capacity, building public works, protecting landscape and environment, and promote local traditions and cultural identities are among criteria on building new rural areas initiated by the government since 2010.-VNA
