The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has over 400 fishery team, with 2,128 vessels and nearly 20,000 workers.

The fishery teams have supported each other to exploit seafood more efficiently and reduce risks and accidents at sea.

According to Truong Van Ngu, head of the Rach Gia city fisheries association, the establishment of the fisheries teams has strengthened link and solidarity among the fishermen communities, allowing them to overcome difficulties such as broken boats or equipment.

The groups have also helped to reduce loss of life and property due to natural disasters and maritime risks, as well as helping local agencies achieve strategic development of the marine economy and protect national sovereignty.

The province strives to catch 445,500 tonnes of aquatic products in 2014, up to 1.7 percent year-on-year, while it caught over 74,500 tonnes of seafood in the first two months of this year.

It has a fleet of over 10,700 fishing vessels, including 250 ones for fishery logistic services.

Kien Giang authorities have continued to help local fishermen access outreach fishing areas sustainable, safely and effectively.-VNA
