Koreas fail to reach consensus on Kaesong complex

Korea and the Republic of Korea failed to reach agreement
in talks concerning the Kaesong joint industrial complex that ended on
Jan. 21.

Korea (DPRK) and the Republic of Korea (RoK) failed to reach agreement
in talks concerning the Kaesong joint industrial complex that ended on
January 21, said a RoK Unification Ministry spokesman.
The Yonhap News Agency quoted spokesman Chun Hae Sung as saying that both sides could not narrow their differences despite the extended discussions.
The major disagreement was a DPRK demand for wage increases for its workers at the complex be included on the agenda of future talks but the RoK refused to accept the proposal, Yonhap reported.
A 16-member delegation from the RoK started negotiations with the DPRK on January 19 to discuss ways to improve operations of their joint industrial parks.
The Kaesong industrial complex resulted from the historic inter-Korea Summit in 2000. Approximately 42,000 DPRK employees are working for 110 RoK businesses at the complex./.
