Floods and landslides triggered by downpours in northern mountainous provinces of the Philippines killed 94 people, local officials said on Oct. 9.

The latest statistics show that 69 people died in Benguet province as landslides struck on the night of Oct. 8 and the morning of Oct. 9 in five different towns. Landslides also left five dead and 32 missing in Mountain province.

Typhoon Parma , accompanied by heavy rains, has been devastating the Philippines since Oct. 3, resulting in the water levels in northern lakes and rivers rising rapidly.

Up to 30,000 local residents in the coastal province of Pangasinan were evacuated from their homes as between 60 percent and 80 percent of the area became flooded.

Meanwhile, thousands of people have become stranded throughout Nueva Ecija province.

Parma made landfall in the Philippines just a week after tropical storm Ketsana hit the country, killing at least 337 people and forcing almost 500,000 others to evacuate. Ketsana caused losses estimated at 10 billion pesos, mainly in lost crops and damage to the country’s infrastructure./.
