Vientiane (VNA) - The Health Ministry of Laos is confident that the country will complete the goal of vaccination for at least 50 percent of the population this year.

At a press conference on July 15, the ministry said Laos will receive over 1 million doses of Johnson & Johnson's vaccine, funded by the US through the COVAX Facility, and hundreds of thousands of doses of AstraZeneca's vaccine in the coming days.

The country registered 116 new COVID-19 infections and one fatality in the last 24 hours, of which two were locally-transmitted and the rest were imported cases.
According to the ministry, although the epidemic situation in the country tends to decrease, the situation in neighbouring countries is very concerning, which causes more and more Lao workers in Thailand to return home. The rate of infection in this group is quite high, up to over 15 percent.

As of July 13, a total of 1,030,461 people in Laos had been injected with the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 647,872 people had received the second shot./.
