Laos ’s sixth National Assembly opened its eighth session in Vientiane on Nov. 16 in the presence of Party and State President Choummaly Sayasone.

Addressing the opening session, Lao NA President Thongsing Thammavong highlighted the complicated global situation affecting the socio-economic development of Laos in terms of finance, economy and climate change.

However, Thongsing Thammavong stressed, the Lao Government and people spared no effort to overcome these difficulties, and obtained an economic growth rate of 7.6 percent--while actively participating in regional and international political and economic forums.

Thongsing Thammavong also spoke of weak points in socio-economic management as well as outstanding problems including State budget collection, job generation and boosting personal income.

At this session, Lao NA deputies will focus on four new draft laws on smoking, youth, construction and state investment, along with amendments to several laws, including the laws on the people’s court and the people’s procuracy./.
