Vientiane (VNA) – General Director Sounthon Khanthavong of the Lao news agency KPL highlighted support that the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) has offered to KPL since its establishment, especially in training of reporters and editors.

He praised the VNA assistance at a ceremony in Vientiane on May 9 marking KPL’s 50th founding anniversary, which saw the presence of Lao Politburo member and Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.

At the event, Sounthon Khanthavong recalled the glorious history of KPL over the past five decades, saying that 50 years ago, on the occasion of the 12th founding anniversary of the Lao Patriotic Front (LPF), Prince Souphanouvong, LPF Chairman, signed a decision to establish KPL – the official news agency of Pathet Lao at Phukhe cave gate – the working place of the Department of the Pictorial News.

Together with the LPF newspaper, Pathet Lao radio station and the Department of the Pictorial News, KPL was tasked with popularising the Lao people’s heroic fight against imperialists to the public at home and abroad. January 6, 1968 marked its first publication.

Lao PM Sisoulith lauded the KPL for fulfilling assigned tasks over the past five decades under the leadership and drastic directions of the Party and State.

He asked KPL staff to raise their sense of responsibility and self-study to deserve the official news agency of the Lao State, be loyal to the Party and State, and expand news sharing with news outlets of strategic partners and ASEAN member states.

On the occasion, Lao Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Bosengkham Vongdala presented the noble Isala Order, first class, to KPL in recognition of its important contributions to national liberation and independence, as well as the current national defence and construction.-VNA
